A Tribute to Ma Nfang Ebai, mother, auntie and friend

I have had a special relationship with Ma Nfang ever since I came back from Queen's college, Lagos in 1963 and found that she lived next door to us in Lido street Kumba. A special bond developed also because we shared a very dear relation, her sister, who was also my mother's sister, Ma Teresa Henshaw. At the time I was growing up, these were the enlightened ladies in our world. They were educated, working class women who were holding down their jobs and managing their families. With both women, I had profound admiration and respect. I think that it was mutual. Ma Nfang showed me so much love that once when she heard that thieves attacked me in my house in Yaounde, she came to our house in Kumba with a very big cock to celebrate my survival. She wondered who dared want to touch 'her queen', Ma Beloe, as she called me. That, I'll never forget. I tried to visit her as often as I could as I derived pleasure from her infectious smile of welcome. Not long ago, I took her some flowers. Her face lit up with joy and exclaimed in disbelief, "These for me?". She would remind me of the last time I sent her some banana cake. She would remember each little gesture and be so grateful for it. It was not as if she lacked anything but was just clearly an indication of her generosity of spirit and I cherished it. News of Ma Nfang's transition has met me here in the UK. I'm sorry that I might miss her funeral celebration but I'm thankful to God that I was part of the celebration of her life at 90. I thank God for her life well lived and for her caring children. May her soul rest in perfect peace. Ma Beloe, your friend and admirer

My lovely Grand ma, you have been one of the best people to be in my life. I'll never forget you and not to talk of the memories shared. From you I learned that courage and determination is all we need. I'll never forget the chats we used to have in your room where you would tell me stories and how you used to be when you were way younger. The few years we've been together have been the best because you gave me that amazing grandmotherly love. My kid sister and I are forever grateful to the Lord for making us spent quality time with you. my kid sister nadia says as I quote "Mama, I will miss you so much. we used to chat and you used to tell me stories which sometimes I didn't understand and you kept on looking at me and going forward. they were very interesting ones who made me laugh. you made kumba a place to be remembered to me and I'll love you and forever keep you in my heart". we both love you so much mama. I'll forever miss the way you called me "chinchie". we will never feel good when we think you are gone forever but we would always remember the amazing woman you were in our lives. God bless you and keep watching over you. May your soul Rest in perfect peace. love you mama❤

Dear Auntie,

I remember the times you came to our home for a visit. One could easily tell it was you by hearing your unique laughter. You and dad would sit, talk and laugh so much. Sometimes, I would catch myself laughing too without even understanding what you were laughing about. You were always so happy, caring and gracious. It was impossible to not feel your love and affection. Your candor was always so refreshing. I am honored to have had you as my one and only aunt and I couldn’t ask for any better. Thank you for being such a positive influence in my life. Thank you for your love, life lessons, encouragements, advices, and list goes on. I celebrate your wonderful person now and forever. Please, give dad a big fat hug for me. Sleep now and take rest for your work is done.

For the Sona and Ebai family,

May the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Hear our cry O God, listen to our prayers; from the end of the earth we call to you when our hearts are faint. Lead us to the rock that is higher than us. Amen!!

My darling Aunt Ma Nfang , my late Dad's favorite sister, you lived a full life, blest with many children, lost two of them along life's journey but still carried on inspite the pain.
Above all that, the Lord was gracious to you and satisfied you with long life ; 90+ and you were privileged to see your grand children and great grand children too.
You were a real blessing to us all.
You have gone home to rest with your dear ones who preceeded you .I will miss your beautiful smile on the vibrant face that had no wrinkles even at 90.
Rest in Perfect Peace

12-02-2016 8:21 PM -- By: Mbone Epie,  From: London- UK

Mama today makes one month since God took you home! Our journey started in October 1987 while I was a student teacher in GTTC Kumba, my late dad came to withdraw me from Teachers Training College; he wanted me to go to university instead. When we left GTTC campus, dad stopped at Mama’s off license to calm down his nerves. Mama served him a nice cold bottle of beer and I overhead their conversation Mama advising him that, children always have their own plans different from what we have for them. Mama said: “Principal allowed your daughter to finish her training this can be a stepping stone for her to other lucrative jobs”. To cut a long story short dad changed his mind reversed his car to GTTC and that is how I escaped from his mulongo and Graduated from GTTC. Mama, indeed you were Right! I used teaching as a stepping stone and my experience as a teacher has made me who I am today. Our journey did not end there I kept contact with Mama through my long time inseparable best friend with whom I enjoyed some of mama’s stories and when my dad died I visited Mama after 24 years (she called me her Friend). Mama you left us on the 03 November and I laid my dad to rest on the 03 November 2012. Family isn’t always blood. It’s the people in your life who want you in theirs. The ones who accept you for who you are, who would do anything to see you smile and who LOVE YOU no matter what Mama I will miss our telephone conversations, your sense of humour, your laughter and the cuddles whenever I am back home and had the opportunity to visit you in Kumba. Please Mama do me one last favour tell my dad that, I miss him so much and you both have created a vacuum in our hearts and your memories will become our treasure. We will never get over your passing away but we will learn to live with it Mbone Epie

MAMA !!! as you also called me and made me feel special , I want to sincerely thank God for your life well spent during your journey here on earth. When I received the message that you had passed on to glory , I was initially perplexed and in denial, because I was reassured that you were at the right place and the Lord shall give us another reason to testify about his goodness in your life. Mama I just want to thank you for the joyous moment my kids and I were priviledged to share with you during your brief stay with us as a family while in Buea. We shall for ever remain blessed and grateful to you for the numerous inspirations we drew from you, who incessantly portrayed the qualities of a selfless, deligent, disciplined , organised, seasoned domestic science mistress and loving mother. You slept into the Lords hands on my Birthday. Thank you for the home taken message. MAMA, you shall forever be remembered. We love you but God loves you most . May He grant you eternal rest in His bossom. In-law Maggie Waah Bejanga

I'm a friend of Terri and for a few years now and I can recount the wonderful stories and the beautiful pictures of home especially of her mom and dad. She would always talk fondly about her mom with a smile and her many adventures steeped in the beautiful Cameroon Culture. While I never met Terri's mom she seemed like such a beautiful and warm soul who knew how to enjoy life and would always carry a smile for anyone who needed it. She is fact is not gone but rather she lives in the hearts of her children who are now the image bearers of such a wonderful and beautiful women who managed to help so many along their own journey filled with inspiration in life making this a better place. I know she is smiling up there and proud of her children….

Aunty Christie, you have created a vacuum that will never be filled. Sona Ebai has told me lots stories of his relationship with  you, a bond so strong that most people would yearn to have.
