Hippie Chris age 19

This online memorial was created in loving memory of Stephen/Hippie Simmons, whose life story is told throughout this memorial website. Please sign Christopher(Hippie's) guest book and let us know you came to visit. We will remember Stephen Christopher (aka Hippie) forever.

Christopher's 19th birthday

Christopher was born in Nacogdoches, Tx. but spent most of his life in the El Paso, Tx - Santa Teresa, NM area.  He was the youngest child in his family, having 2 older sisters and one older brother.  He was a kind hearted, loving and giving young man.  He was a Christian and loved God very much although he battled mental illness in the form of bi-polar disorder and PTSD.  When we lived in NM, Chris's friends nicknamed him 'hippie' due to his long hair and the way he dressed.  The name stuck and many ppl only knew him as hippie, others knew him as Chris or Stephen -- he went by Hippie or Chris the most.

Chris and friend, Abbie - 3 wks before he died

A few years before he died; we learned that Chris was a MRSA carrier although he had few problems from it.  He had many piercings and a tattoo and due to much emotional pain, he was also a 'cutter'.  Yet, in spite of all this, he only developed one abcess on his leg, from whatever we didn't know - but this is when the Drs found MRSA.  MRSA is a type of staph that is resistant to some antibiotics, making it sometimes difficult to treat.  We were never told it could be deadly.

At the end of Feb. Chris became ill with what looked to be the flu or a virus of some kind w/ fever, chills and body aches.  This developed into a bad cough and by the beginning of March, he was in a coma, intubated and running fevers up to 108.  He died on March 2nd of massive organ failure.  He was surrounded by his siblings, mother, 2 close friends, an aunt and the family's close friend and counselor.  He died just 3 days after his grandmother Hazel Richard.

When Life Changed Forever...

Community aquired MRSA can be life threatening.  If it enters through a viral infection such as the flu and gets into the lungs, it causes necrotizing pneamonia; that is to say - a type of fast acting, flesh eating illness.  CA- MRSA often carries a bacteria called PVL,  which attacks the immune system and kills off the white blood cells, leaving the body defenseless to fight against the pneamonia or anything else.  It is a rapid moving, devastating illness and death often occurs days or sometimes hours, after the cough begins. (3-4 days after the 1st sign of illness) It has earned the name of being a "super-bug".  We have learned that although many ppl have heard of MRSA, they really do not know how very deadly it can be.  It is my desire to let as many ppl know about this illness so that maybe some lives can be saved.  I would not wish anyone to have to learn about this illness, the way my family has had to learn.  We love and miss our 'Hippie' Chris so very much.  I know he is with God now and no longer suffering but oh how we long for when he was here with us.  We love you Chris and we will never forget you!!!  No matter what!! <3
