Charlie (徐玉平) Shu
April 2 1964 - July 14 2012
Charlie, known to his close friends as Yuping, or Lao Xu,has lived his life to the fullest! He was adventurous and always faced life's new experiences without fear. He followed his own unique path with passion.
Lao Xu was born in Shanghai in 1964. He graduated from Shanghai Xingzhi High School in 1981. He attended the University of Science and Technology of China from 1981 to 1986. After graduation, Lao Xu worked as a research fellow at the Geochemistry Research Institute of the Chinese Academy from 1986 to 1988. In 1988, he came to the US to pursue his Ph.D degree at the Ohio State University. Because of his excellent research work, Lao Xu was offered an Assistant Professor position at the University of Illinois at Chicago right after he received his Ph.D in 1994, at a time when an academic job was hard to find even with multiple years of post-doc experiences. After more than 3 years in the academic field, Lao Xu made a bold career change in 1997 that stunned many of his friends: he quit his academic career and returned to Columbus, Ohio to start a new career as a software development engineer at the Chemical Abstract Services (CAS). Three years later, he joined Lucent in 2000 to explore the then-flourishing telecom field.
Lao Xu was an outdoor person, an avid sports lover who has enjoyed all kinds of sports, from soccer to ping-pong, tennis, swimming, golfing, running, and recently cycling, which took away his life. He was a person with a loving heart, always standing ready to offer helps to others. The fatal accident that claimed his life happened during a charity bike ride event on July 14, 2012.
Lao Xu, you will be deeply missed by all of us!
